Over the years I have completed many migrations starting from the days of NT4.0.
With the ease of virtualisation now it's so easy to build a complete multi site test lab that's fully
routable on a single machine. My personal favourite is a small pc I have, 32gb ram with an SSD.
Using pfsense as my virtual router, don't forget the technet test lab guides to help build your basic lab.
I always try and replicate the setup of my customer as close as possible even if their configuration is wrong. At least you can work out how to migrate and fix their issues.
One you have your lab, go through the migration making notes on everything especially any gotchas.
I used a step by step approach in excel and make sure I highlight key milestones and identify at what stage I need to engage with other members of the business. Soon you with have a first draft project plan.
